Material Research & Technology
The extreme versatility of polyurethanes is reflected not only in the wide range of processing methods they offer but also in the plethora of end products derived from them. These need to meet the very highest quality, functional and safety requirements at all times, which is precisely the remit of the Materials Research & Technology division of PUR Innovation.
Because our material researchers know the material properties of our polyurethanes in typical applications inside out, they can accurately predict the material’s subsequent product properties. This is the fundamental element of our work and significantly increases planning and processing reliability for our customers. Our comprehensive understanding of the reaction behavior of different formulations makes it easier for processors successfully to complete all the necessary steps on the way to creating the finished products.
A wide range of specially developed expert systems is used to optimize the customer’s processes all the way from planning to live production. For example, we use our high-tech tool Bayc@p® (Bayer Computer Aided Processing) to analyze and perfect the production processes for polyurethane molded parts. This ensures that process parameters are checked and the molded parts ultimately meet the required specifications.
Simulations and real crash tests:
We can now also control polyurethane’s flow paths in cavities for refrigerators, side moldings, bumpers and other complex geometries more effectively using performance-enhanced computer-aided engineering (CAE) simulations. On-screen modeling provides a basis for creating optimum mold designs and more efficient demolding processes – and thus for quicker, more cost-effective production cycles.
However, there’s no replacing the “hands-on” tests carried out in our state-of-the-art Physical Testing Center. Since the priority at all times is to maximize processing and user safety, we subject our high-tech materials to rigorous computer-based testing to ensure their suitability for specific applications – for example, using real crash tests or other physical stress tests. And we only recommend customer products based on our raw materials and polyurethane systems after carrying out extensive test series designed to deliver optimum throughput. Our outstandingly well-equipped test laboratories and the “fire test house” of Bayer Industry Services have received many national and international accreditations and certificates.
