Process Research Isocyanates & Polyols

Efficient and reliable production processes reduce investment costs and increase both product quality and competitiveness. For that reason, we attach great importance to continuous optimization of our processes and facilities and speedy implementation of new processing technologies. This allows us to systematically expand our technology leadership in the interests of our customers.

The challenge is an ongoing one in the Process Research division. In close cooperation with Application Development and the engineering subsidiary Bayer Technology Services, it generates new ideas and concepts for optimizing the efficiency of our raw material production.
Our process research team boasts a state-of-the-art miniature machine park for analyzing all the relevant processes and is also well-versed in optimizing our customized product portfolio to meet the needs of our customers and markets.

Process Research is subdivided into the divisions Process Research Isocyanates and Process Research Polyols. The Process Research Isocyanates team has recently made significant progress in gas phase phosgenation for toluene diisocyanate production – using a new technology that requires around 80 % less solvent than other techniques, and 60 % less energy consumption compared to a world-scale plant using traditional technology. This has led to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions of 60,000 tons a year.

Customer- and market-oriented solutions
Process Research Polyols is pressing ahead with improvement of catalysis processes, for example, using our globally unique IMPACT technology for the production of polyether polyols. This uses around 200 times less catalyst than conventional methods, because the IMPACT catalyst has a marked effect even in small quantities – it takes no more than a few grams to produce 2.5 tons of polyol. Other advantages of this new technology result from its excellent processability and lower energy consumption. It can also be used to produce completely new polyether polyols for innovative applications.
