Polyurethane – the stuff that foams are made of

The figures speak for themselves: The Polyurethanes Business Unit (BU PUR) not only holds pole position worldwide, it is also the largest section within Bayer MaterialScience. With a workforce of about 4,745, BU PUR has more employees than any other business unit within Bayer MaterialScience. It contributes around 5.100 billion euros in the year 2008 to the company's total sales – about 50 percent. With its broad range of product brands, BU PUR ensures that its customers always have a tailor-made solution for their projects..

In order to retain its leading position and to develop its profitably wherever possible, the PUR business unit’s efforts are based on three strategic cornerstones: efficiency, innovation and growth. A core element of this strategy is to reduce costs through innovative, highly efficient, and environmentally compatible production processes in world-scale production facilities. Innovations such as the Multitec® polyurethane spray system drive growth by tapping into new markets. The PUR business unit has clearly subdivided its marketing activities into a Raw Materials Area for basic products and a Systems Area for PUR systems and formulations.
The latter trades under the umbrella name of BaySystems®, which includes the continually expanding global network of system houses. Focusing on their own regions, these system houses offer a range of products that are tailored to the specific needs of customers and accelerate the market launch of PUR innovations by working closely together with customers.

Polyurethanes are used primarily in the automotive, construction and electrical/electronics industries, but also in a number of specialty applications: wheels and tires for forklift trucks, for example, are made from the high-performance polyurethane elastomer, Vulkollan®. The range of application for polyurethane is almost unlimited: mattresses, upholstered furniture, car seats, insulation for refrigerators, car bumpers and leisure shoes, to mention just a few. And other new applications are opening up all the time.
